Waymo pays riders $2.85 to pair robotaxi trips with public transit

Waymo is launching a “transit rewards” program in the San Francisco Bay Area that credits riders with $2.85 in Waymo Cash — the price of a San Francisco bus fare — whenever they take a Waymo ride and use public transit within two hours of each other. Riders link a Visa card in the Waymo app, and the credit is issued automatically for trips across all 27 Bay Area transit agencies that accept contactless tap-to-pay. The rollout starts with Waymo employees before opening to the public over the coming weeks, with other cities planned later.

The move positions Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing as a feeder to existing transit rather than a replacement, a framing echoed by California transportation officials and the mayor of San José. Waymo cites surveys showing more than half of riders in its mature markets (San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix) also use public transit. Alongside the rewards program, Waymo is partnering with Caltrain and leasing 40 dedicated station parking spaces to stage vehicles for transit connections — a model it hopes to extend to other agencies.

The program builds on earlier transit-credit pilots in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Waymo’s participation in LA Metro’s Mobility Wallet, and a microtransit tie-up with Via in Chandler, Arizona. Beyond the mobility angle, the design is notable for tying incentives to card-linked trip data: pairing rides with transit taps requires Waymo to correlate a rider’s Visa activity across separate systems, making payment-network integration and the resulting travel-pattern data central to how the rewards actually work.
