It is run independently by Cal Paterson and Oleg Podsechin, with no connection to Y Combinator despite sharing the Hacker News name. Coordination happens through a WhatsApp group where each meeting’s time and place are posted.

Membership is deliberately skewed toward active contributors rather than lurkers: applicants need a Hacker News account past the green-name newcomer stage and at least 64 karma, though the bar is often waived for anyone already known to a member. Prospective attendees join via a Google Form.
