Tidal Will Label and Demonetize AI Music, Stopping Short of a Ban

Tidal’s new AI policy, effective July 15, 2026, takes a middle path on AI-generated music: the service will keep accepting it but will cut off its earning potential. Tracks that Tidal identifies as wholly AI-generated become ineligible for royalty attribution, so uploaders can still distribute them but won’t be paid per stream. The rules apply to the platform broadly, including its independent-artist channel, Tidal Upload.

Alongside demonetization, Tidal is adding transparency and anti-fraud measures. Listeners will start seeing an icon next to content flagged as 100% AI-generated, with the labeling rolling out in mid-July. The company also says it will block or remove AI music tied to fraudulent activity — material that exploits a real artist’s music, name, or likeness, deceives listeners, or degrades the quality of the catalog. Tidal is pushing responsibility upstream too, expecting content distributors to identify AI-generated uploads before they ever reach the platform.

The significance is less in the enforcement than in the model it signals. By demonetizing rather than banning, Tidal joins a wave of streaming services trying to curb AI-driven royalty dilution and impersonation without policing creativity outright. Critics note the obvious gap: detection is only as good as the classifier and the distributors feeding it, so partially AI-generated tracks and mislabeled uploads remain a loophole. It reframes the AI-music fight as an economic and provenance problem rather than a content-moderation one.
