Stripe to Acquire OpenRouter, the Multi-Model AI Gateway

OpenRouter, the marketplace and routing layer that lets developers access more than 400 AI models through a single API, is being acquired by Stripe. The company says it now handles over 10 trillion tokens per day for a claimed 10 million-plus developers and businesses, and pitches itself as a neutral broker that ranks models on price, performance, and uptime rather than provider allegiance. Management insists the deal changes nothing operationally: same name, product, roadmap, and existing integrations, with routing decisions still driven by what benefits the user.

The strategic logic leans on a shared ‘developer-first API’ culture — OpenRouter has long been branded ‘Stripe for LLMs’ — plus Stripe’s assets in global infrastructure, a large customer network, and fraud and abuse tooling that OpenRouter frames as increasingly critical as AI-targeted abuse grows. The stated bet is on a multi-model future where no single lab becomes the default by inertia, and where an independent gateway keeps the ecosystem competitive.

The obvious tension is neutrality: a routing layer that claims to treat every model equally is now owned by a payments giant deepening its AI footprint, and ‘nothing changes’ is easier to assert before closing than to sustain after integration. The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close within weeks. Terms were not disclosed.
