Stripe Nears $7B+ Deal for AI Model-Routing Startup OpenRouter

Stripe has reportedly reached a deal to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, according to Bloomberg — a striking markup from the roughly $1.3 billion valuation the startup commanded just months earlier when it closed a $113 million Series B in May. The Wall Street Journal first flagged the two companies’ acquisition talks last month; Stripe declined to comment on what it called rumor and speculation.

OpenRouter operates a gateway that lets developers route requests across more than 400 AI models, picking whichever fits a given task’s performance and budget needs from a single integration point. CEO Alex Atallah has pitched it as ‘Stripe for AI,’ emphasizing that the abstraction layer spares customers from being locked into any one model provider. The company claims 8 million users and counts Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s CapitalG among its backers.

For Stripe, the acquisition would slot a model-agnostic inference layer alongside its payments infrastructure, positioning it as connective tissue for AI applications the way it already is for online transactions. The price — a fivefold jump over a spring valuation — underscores how aggressively incumbents are paying to own the plumbing beneath the AI application stack rather than compete at the model layer itself.
