Shopify acquires Tailwind CSS; framework stays MIT-licensed

Tailwind CSS, the utility-first styling framework now pulling more than 110 million weekly installs and used behind interfaces like ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, and Reddit, is being acquired by Shopify. Founder Adam Wathan frames the move as securing a long-term maintenance home for a project that millions of developers depend on, while giving the team a large real-world product to build against rather than a template-and-templates side business.

Shopify was an early large-scale adopter of Tailwind and now treats it as a load-bearing part of its stack, spanning merchant storefronts, the admin dashboard, checkout, the Shop app, and its push into agentic commerce. That surface area is pitched as the reason the framework will keep improving: the team hits the same problems its users do and can solve them upstream.

For existing users, the practical changes are limited. Tailwind CSS and the other open-source projects remain MIT-licensed and community-maintained under Shopify’s support. The commercial side winds down, however — the team is halting new sign-ups for paid products like Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, keeping access only for current customers, and refocusing on the open-source core within Shopify.
