Shift offers free home cleanings in exchange for robot training footage

Shift, an AI training data startup, is offering free home cleaning services in New York in exchange for the right to record the work using camera-equipped hats worn by its contracted cleaners. The point-of-view footage feeds models intended to train household robots, and the company argues the resulting dataset is valuable enough to subsidize the labor. Expansion to San Francisco, London, Zurich, and Munich is planned.

Shift claims to anonymize sensitive content by blurring faces, names, and information visible on screens or ID cards before footage is used for training. Cleaners are vetted through partners rather than employed directly, and can refuse specific tasks. The company encourages messy homes, noting that harder cleaning scenarios produce more useful training data.

The arrangement reflects a broader market for recordings of mundane human tasks to train embodied AI, with Shift already paying tens of thousands of contributors across 15 countries through its app. The company hints at extending the model into plumbing, cooking, and construction — domains where collecting in-the-wild demonstration data is otherwise expensive and slow.
