Sherline Tools Winds Down US Micro-Machining After Nearly 50 Years

Sherline Products, the American maker of precision tabletop lathes, mills, micro-machining accessories, and small CNC machines, is shutting down manufacturing. The current owners, who bought the company in 2017 and invested in new designs and modernized production, say the economics no longer work: pandemic aftershocks, rising manufacturing and operating costs, and shifting consumer buying habits have made it untenable for a small domestic manufacturer to stay competitive.

The wind-down is gradual rather than abrupt. Sherline plans to keep building and selling machines, tooling, and replacement parts through the end of October 2026 as remaining equipment, materials, and inventory allow, though products relying on larger production machinery will disappear sooner and stock will run out unevenly. The company says it will keep an online presence, honor existing warranties, supply spare parts while they last, and preserve its archive of technical and educational resources.

Despite the reassurances, the practical picture points to a full closure. Production equipment is being removed from service in what looks like a liquidation, and one of the owners has said publicly that Sherline will be out of business by the end of the year at the latest. For the hobbyist machinist and small-shop community, it marks the end of a well-regarded US brand.
