Quake Turns 30: Free 'Dawn of the Machine' Episode Lands on Every Platform

id Software and MachineGames are marking Quake’s 30th anniversary with Dawn of the Machine, a free episode pushed automatically to existing owners across Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, the Microsoft Store, Game Pass, and both Switch generations. The Epic Games Store and GOG editions are notably left out for now, and cross-play invites between those versions and the supported platforms will fail with a misleading ‘Disconnected from servers’ message. The download bundles 19 new single-player maps, a fresh soundtrack, a deathmatch arena, three achievements, an on-demand cheats menu, and an ‘id Vault’ gallery of unused assets and early development levels.

Beyond content, the update reworks how the game plays. A looping campaign structure reshapes levels on each pass, with runes opening sealed routes and persistent health and ammo upgrades adding light progression. Enemy and weapon variants — the Rocket Ogre, Blood Shambler, a lightning-chaining Super Axe, a ricocheting Laser Cannon — force players to rethink familiar encounters, alongside dimension-shifting puzzle mechanics. The patch also ships engine fixes that cut input latency through better interpolation, decouple weapon bob from view bob, and cap enemy shadow-casting lights to protect frame rate.

The more consequential change for the community is technical: localization strings now live inside Quake’s PAK archive rather than the external KPF file, so third-party engine ports must be updated to read strings from the PAK and can drop KPF loading entirely. Mods can also inject their own localization by overriding language-specific files in their PAKs. A known Switch bug still breaks online multiplayer when hosting Dawn of the Machine maps across level transitions, with joining cross-play games offered as the workaround.
