Orbify demos patent-pending 'warping' 3D navigation that bends the map

Orbify, a Norwegian company (Orbify AS), is showing off an interactive 3D navigation demo built around what it calls patent-pending ‘warping’ technology — the visual effect the Hacker News post likened to the folding-city scene in Inception. The demo drops the user into a 3D scene of Hamilton Stadium in Ontario, navigable with WASD movement plus mouse panning and rotation, and pitches the concept as ‘Navigation Reimagined’ aimed at turn-by-turn direction display.

The rendering runs in the browser on the PlayCanvas engine, and the 3D stadium model is credited to Justin Eastman under CC BY 4.0. The core warping technique, however, is proprietary: it is filed under a pending PCT patent application (PCT/EP2026/058725), and the company is courting pilot projects and technology partnerships rather than releasing code. There is no open-source component to the navigation tech itself.

The significance here is narrow — this is an early-stage product demo and a visual novelty rather than a shipping feature or a security-relevant development. The main points of note are the map-bending UX concept and the fact that Orbify is staking IP claims on it while still in the demonstration phase.
