OpenJDK bars AI-generated code as Oracle touts AI writing its own software

Oracle, steward of the open-source OpenJDK project, has barred contributors from submitting AI-generated code, pointing to safety, security, and intellectual-property concerns. Developers may still lean on large language models privately to debug or review their work, but any AI-produced material is off-limits for repositories, pull requests, and other project channels.

The stance sits awkwardly against Oracle’s own messaging. Co-founder Larry Ellison has claimed AI models now write the company’s code, and co-CEO Mike Sicilia has credited AI tooling with letting leaner engineering teams ship faster. The gap illustrates a broader tension: the provenance and licensing ambiguity that makes AI-generated contributions risky for a widely-used open-source codebase is the same risk companies are quietly absorbing internally.

The policy lands amid heavy spending, with Oracle committing $70 billion this year to datacentre expansion. That outlay drew a downgrade from S&P to BBB-—one notch above junk—on concerns about uncertain returns.
