Open-Source RTS Gets French Steampunk Reskin Within Hours

A developer released Battle Drones, a browser and mobile real-time strategy game, under Apache 2.0. A French fork appeared immediately, completely reskinning the game as a steampunk strategy title set in Belle Époque France around 1900. The reskinned version, called Panache, replaces original units with period-appropriate machines: dirigibles, steam-powered vehicles, automated soldiers, and walking fortresses.

The fork delivers aesthetic changes rather than gameplay modifications. New 3D models replace the originals, an animated intro was added, and the soundtrack received French arrangements. The speed of this derivative work demonstrates how permissive open-source licensing enables rapid community remixes.
