NTSB Reads Out Both Black Boxes From Miami 767 Cargo Runway Excursion

The NTSB has successfully recovered and read out the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from 21 Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-33A freighter that ran off the runway at Miami International Airport on September 6. Both units were pulled from the accident site and processed at the agency’s Vehicle Recorder Laboratory in Washington. The board stresses that everything released so far is preliminary and subject to revision.

The CVR — an Acron Aviation (ex-L3Harris) FA2100 — held more than two hours of good-quality audio across four channels, while the Ontic (ex-Honeywell) SSFDR captured roughly 54 hours of data spanning more than 400 parameters. Early readouts place the aircraft on approach to runway 30, with FDR data showing a groundspeed of about 96 knots in the final moments before the recording ends. The NTSB cautions that the CVR and FDR timelines have not yet been precisely synchronized.

Next, the board will convene a CVR group at its Washington headquarters to review the audio and produce a written transcript. This is a fact-gathering update, not a finding of cause; no probable cause or contributing factors have been determined, and the details captured on the recorders may change as the investigation proceeds.
