Nitter Vows to Continue After X Corp Cease-and-Desist Demands Shutdown

X Corp. sent cease-and-desist letters on 24 August 2026 demanding the permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project’s source repository. Days later, the maintainers announced that, on the strength of legal advice, Nitter will keep operating, with further details promised soon. The confrontation pits Elon Musk’s company against one of the most widely used privacy front-ends for the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Nitter is an open-source, AGPLv3-licensed alternative interface that lets people read Twitter/X content without JavaScript, ads, or accounts. Because every request is proxied through the backend, the client never contacts X directly, blocking IP logging and browser-fingerprint tracking that persist even behind a VPN and ad blockers. The project pulls data via X’s unofficial internal API rather than the official developer API, and its pages are dramatically lighter and faster than the real site—advantages that became more attractive after X forced login walls and stripped users of control over ad data sharing.

The legal threat targets both self-hosted instances and the code itself, a strategy that could scatter the community-run network even if individual operators are hard to pursue. The maintainers’ decision to press on signals they believe they have defensible ground, but the dispute underscores the escalating pressure platform owners are putting on scraping-based tools and third-party clients that route around their tracking and monetization.
