Jujutsu creator Martin von Zweigbergk joins startup ERSC as CTO

East River Source Control, a version-control startup that launched in 2025 with backing from Amplify Partners, has named Jujutsu creator Martin von Zweigbergk as its chief technology officer. He’ll lead engineering on what the company frames as next-generation source control built for a world where AI is dramatically expanding the volume and pace of code that teams produce. ERSC’s first product, a storage layer called ERSC Storage, is slated to enter private beta later this month.

von Zweigbergk brings unusually deep pedigree in the space. He started Jujutsu as a side project in 2019 and later developed it full-time at Google; the Apache-licensed tool now has more than 30,000 GitHub stars. Earlier he worked on Fig, the Mercurial-based client that gave Google engineers a distributed workflow atop the Piper monorepo, and contributed to Git itself. He plans to remain a core maintainer of Jujutsu as an open-source project.

The hire signals ERSC’s central bet: Jujutsu improves the client side of version control, but the remote still runs on Git, whose storage model von Zweigbergk argues hits a scaling ceiling fast for large products. His pitch is that the server-side storage layer needs a fundamental redesign to match modern workflows — and that such infrastructure work is better funded by a company than by a volunteer open-source effort. It’s a notable vote of confidence in commercial source control at a moment when AI-generated code is straining existing tooling.
