Irish datacenters now eat 23% of the national grid, up from 5% a decade ago

Datacenters consumed 7,663 GWh of electricity in Ireland during 2025 — a 10 percent rise over 2024 and now close to a quarter of all metered power use, per Central Statistics Office figures. That share has climbed relentlessly from 5 percent in 2015, passing 20 percent in 2023. With more than 80 facilities packed into a country of five million people, the sector now draws more power than every urban household combined (18 percent) and more than double the rural household total (9 percent). CSO statistician Grzegorz Głaczyński noted demand more than doubled between 2015 and 2019, then tripled again by 2025.

Notably, the 2025 increase happened while the Commission for Regulation of Utilities kept a moratorium on new grid connections in place for nearly the entire year, concentrated around Dublin — meaning existing sites alone kept pushing consumption higher. Those restrictions were eased in December 2025 under rules that force operators seeking connections above 10 MW to install matching backup generation or battery capacity, and to feed that power back to the grid when the system needs it.

The scale of the load has turned datacenters into a live political and infrastructure question rather than a niche tech concern, drawing public protests as the grid strains to absorb demand that shows no sign of leveling off. Ireland is an acute case of a global pattern, where compute-hungry buildout increasingly competes with households for finite generation capacity.
