The IRCv3 Working Group is advancing the IRC protocol with backward-compatible extensions. Key features include standardized account login via SASL, message metadata for extensions, instant away notifications, and improved message timestamps. The group is also working on standardized account registration, chat history access, secure connection detection, Unicode nicknames, and client avatars.
