Internet Archive Launches 3x Match to Fund Its 210-Petabyte Infrastructure

The Internet Archive is running a September fundraising drive in which recurring donations are tripled through matching support—a $25 monthly pledge becomes $75, and larger gifts scale proportionally. The organization frames the campaign around infrastructure costs: the servers, storage, power, cooling, and staff needed to keep the Wayback Machine and its collections online.

Central to the pitch is the Archive’s operational independence. It runs no ads, sells no user data, and charges nothing for access, and it builds and maintains its own systems rather than outsourcing to cloud vendors. That self-reliance is what lets it hold roughly 210 petabytes of publicly accessible material, but it also puts the full and growing cost of that infrastructure on the nonprofit itself.

The emphasis on recurring gifts—which average about $25 and provide the predictable revenue the Archive says it depends on—reflects the underlying reality that a free, privacy-respecting, self-hosted digital library of this scale is expensive to sustain, and its continuity rests largely on individual donor support rather than commercial or institutional backing.
