Hashimoto pledges another $400K to Zig, defends its no-LLM contribution policy

Mitchell Hashimoto and his family are committing an additional $400,000 to the Zig Software Foundation, paid as $200,000 per year over two years and mirroring the structure of their 2024 gift. The new pledge brings their total backing of the foundation to $700,000. Hashimoto cites Zig’s steady technical progress on its language and compiler, along with a distinctive approach to maintainership and community, as the reasons he keeps funding the project.

Much of the post is a defense of Zig’s strict ban on LLM-generated contributions, a policy that resurfaced as a flashpoint after Bun forked Zig and pursued a Rust rewrite. Notably, Hashimoto is himself a heavy AI user who has written about shipping real features with AI assistance, and he admits his own views don’t line up with the foundation’s hard line. His point is less about who is right and more about tone: he found the public pile-on lacking in empathy and argues that open source is healthier when projects are free to set unusual, opinionated boundaries and build their own culture around quality.

The donation also reflects a personal stake. Hashimoto credits Zig with making his terminal emulator Ghostty possible, framing his continued support as gratitude for software that let him build what he wanted on his own terms. He closes by encouraging others who can afford it to donate as well.
