Google DeepMind reshuffle: Hassabis moves to Chair, Koray takes helm, Jeff Dean exits

Sundar Pichai has reorganized the leadership of Google DeepMind. Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day-to-day operations, moving from CEO to a strategic role as Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. He keeps running drug-discovery spinout Isomorphic Labs and will advise on models and research while concentrating on long-horizon AGI and scientific direction — framing health, and cancer specifically, as AI’s proving ground. Taking over operations is Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously GDM’s CTO and Google’s Chief AI Architect, who becomes SVP of Google DeepMind reporting directly to Pichai. He inherits Gemini model development, frontier research, and the Gemini app and developer teams.

The larger departure is Jeff Dean, who is leaving after 27 years. Together with Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat — his longtime collaborator on foundational Google infrastructure and early neural-network work — Dean is founding an independent public benefit corporation aimed at accelerating machine learning, science, and engineering research. Google is positioning the split as amicable, staying on as a founding investor and Cloud partner and keeping a joint research framework for ML systems and infrastructure.

The reshuffle is pitched against a backdrop of aggressive momentum: the Gemini app is cited at over 950 million monthly users, Gemma downloads past 900 million, and Gemini 4 in the pipeline. The signal is a division of labor at the top — Hassabis freed to shape strategy and AGI while an operator drives shipping velocity — but losing an engineer of Dean’s stature to a new outside venture is the kind of talent movement worth watching, even with Google retaining financial and technical ties.
