GitHub Copilot adds Kimi K2.7 Code, its first open-weight model option

GitHub Copilot now offers Kimi K2.7 Code, marking the first time an open-weight model has appeared as a selectable choice in Copilot’s model picker. GitHub hosts the model on Microsoft Azure and bills it at provider list pricing under usage-based billing, positioning it as a cheaper alternative for coding workflows. The rollout is gradual, starting with Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Max plans in Visual Studio Code, with support extending across the broader Copilot surface area — Visual Studio, the CLI, cloud agent, JetBrains, Xcode, Eclipse, mobile, and github.com.

Business and Enterprise plans are handled more cautiously: the model is disabled by default and requires an administrator to explicitly turn on the Kimi K2.7 Code policy before anyone in the organization can use it. GitHub recommends admins vet open-weight models against their own security, compliance, and data-governance standards first.

The move signals GitHub’s willingness to broaden model choice beyond the frontier proprietary options that have dominated Copilot, giving developers a lower-cost path while placing the governance burden for open-weight code models squarely on organizations.
