FreeCORE keeps FreeBSD-based TrueNAS CORE alive as a community fork

FreeCORE is a community-maintained continuation of TrueNAS CORE, picking up the FreeBSD-based NAS operating system where the 13.3 release left off and carrying it forward independently. The project positions itself as the successor for CORE users who want to stay on FreeBSD and OpenZFS rather than migrate to the Linux-based TrueNAS SCALE line. Existing TrueNAS CORE 13.3 installations can upgrade in place directly to FreeCORE’s 15.0 release and then follow the project’s own update train.

The current stable build is 15.0-U1, distributed as a downloadable ISO, with development organized into three tracks: a 13.3 base, the 15.0 current series, and a 15.1 next branch. The version jump from 13.3 to 15.0 signals a clean break under new stewardship while preserving upgrade compatibility. Project coordination happens through IRC (#freecore on Libera.Chat), with separate general and security contact addresses.

The effort reflects a familiar open-source pattern: when a vendor winds down a product line, a volunteer community steps in to keep the codebase maintained for users unwilling to switch platforms. For anyone running FreeBSD/OpenZFS storage appliances, FreeCORE offers a migration path that avoids re-platforming, though its long-term viability will hinge on sustained maintainer activity and, critically, ongoing security updates.
