Firefox's Smart Window AI assistant now runs on Mistral, with zero data retention

Mozilla has wired its beta AI browsing assistant, Firefox Smart Window, to Mistral’s models. The feature—which handles complex searches, resurfaces pages you’ve navigated away from, and pulls context from open tabs—goes live first for users in France and North America, with the UK and Germany slated for later in 2026. Both companies are pitching the tie-up as an alliance of open-source camps: Mozilla’s long-running open-web advocacy paired with Mistral’s history of shipping open-weight frontier models.

The headline selling points are privacy and localization. Mozilla says Smart Window conversations aren’t stored on its servers by default, and Mistral has agreed to zero data retention on its end. Mistral is also fine-tuning models on regional languages, dialects, and cultural context, framing this as AI built for local markets rather than exported to them—part of its broader “sovereign AI” messaging as it pushes from enterprise into consumer reach through a distribution partner.

The strategic subtext is competition over the browser as an AI gateway. Both CEOs argue the browser shouldn’t become a one-way funnel to a single vendor’s model, and that open-source providers deserve a seat at that table—a clear jab at incumbents bundling their own assistants. Worth noting this is a vendor announcement, so the privacy and data-retention claims are self-reported commitments rather than independently audited guarantees; the real test will be how zero-retention holds up in practice as the rollout expands.
