Experimental Drug Delivers Functional Cure for Many Hepatitis B Patients

A new therapeutic candidate has shown the ability to functionally cure a significant share of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection, a condition that affects roughly 250 million people globally and currently requires lifelong antiviral suppression. A functional cure means the virus is durably controlled without ongoing medication, even if traces of viral DNA remain in liver cells.

The result is notable because HBV has long resisted curative approaches. Existing nucleoside analogs suppress replication but rarely clear surface antigen, leaving patients on indefinite therapy and at residual risk of liver cancer. A drug that achieves sustained off-treatment response would reshape treatment guidelines and reduce the chronic care burden on health systems.

Larger confirmatory trials and long-term follow-up will determine whether the effect holds across genotypes and patient subgroups, and how the regimen compares with other late-stage candidates aiming at the same endpoint.
