EU-Banned Pesticides Return via Imported Food in 'Toxic Boomerang' Loop

Foodwatch lab tests on 64 rice, tea, and spice products sold in the Netherlands, France, Austria, and Germany found pesticide residues in 49 samples, with 45 containing chemicals not approved for use inside the EU. Fourteen samples exceeded legal residue limits outright. Every paprika, chili, and cumin sample tested positive for unapproved substances, and one paprika powder carried 22 distinct pesticides, six of them banned in the bloc.

The loop is structural rather than accidental. EU member states are still permitted to manufacture and export pesticides they prohibit at home, including Chlorfenapyr, Bifenthrin, Clothianidin, Thiametoxam, and Imidacloprid. European Chemicals Agency data shows six of the detected substances were shipped to third countries in 2024–2025, then returned as residues on imported crops — what foodwatch labels the ‘toxic pesticides boomerang.’

The findings land as Brussels prepares an omnibus package that would bundle ten food-safety laws into a single fast-tracked rollback, loosening pesticide reviews, residue thresholds, and import controls. Foodwatch is pressing MEPs to block the package, arguing the export carve-out and weakened import scrutiny together undermine the EU’s own safety regime.
