Devs push Claude Code to adopt AGENTS.md as a cross-tool standard

A feature request filed against Anthropic’s Claude Code asks the tool to support AGENTS.md, an emerging convention for a single Markdown file that any coding agent can read to understand a project’s structure, conventions, and build steps. Competing tools including OpenAI’s Codex, Amp, and Cursor are already coalescing around the format, positioning it as a vendor-neutral way to hand an AI assistant the context it needs.

The core complaint is that Claude Code’s existing CLAUDE.md file is tied to one vendor. On teams where developers use a mix of agents, a Claude-specific instructions file forces duplication or leaves other tools without guidance, whereas a shared AGENTS.md would serve everyone from one source of truth.

The request reflects a broader standardization push in the fast-growing AI coding-assistant space, where interoperability is becoming a competitive pressure. Whether Anthropic adopts the convention, aliases it to CLAUDE.md, or holds to its own format will signal how much weight it places on cross-tool portability versus a differentiated, product-specific experience.
