Devs press Anthropic for an official Claude Desktop Linux build

A detailed GitHub feature request argues Anthropic should ship a first-party Claude Desktop for Linux, targeting Ubuntu LTS and Debian via a signed apt repository. The filer notes the distribution pipeline already exists, since Claude Code ships signed apt, dnf, and apk packages with per-architecture binaries. The core friction: Claude Code plugins are developed against Claude Desktop extensions, but with no Linux desktop build, plugin authors on Linux must switch to macOS or Windows for every iteration.

The request leans heavily on reverse-engineering work by Simon Willison, Pluto Security, and pvieito showing that Cowork on macOS already boots a custom Ubuntu 22.04 VM via Apple’s Virtualization Framework and runs the Claude Code binary inside it under bubblewrap and seccomp. A community port, johnzfitch/claude-cowork-linux, runs the same mode natively on Linux by stubbing macOS modules. In other words, the Linux execution path lives inside the product; only a published Linux target is missing.

The security angle is the sharpest point. Claude Desktop handles OAuth tokens, API keys, and extension configs, yet Linux users currently rely on aaddrick/claude-desktop-debian, a roughly 4.5k-star community repackage of the Windows Electron build that is unsigned and unaudited by Anthropic. With Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey putting Ubuntu at 27.7% of professional developers’ primary OS, the filer frames the gap as a structural credential-handling risk on a platform Anthropic’s own agent runtime depends on, and asks at minimum for a public roadmap statement.
