Denmark Mandates Oral Defenses for Take-Home Assignments to Curb AI Cheating

Denmark’s Ministry of Education has made oral defenses mandatory for all written assignments completed at home by upper-secondary students, a measure aimed squarely at AI-assisted cheating. The rule takes effect immediately and applies to roughly 9,000 students in the two-year HF (Higher Preparatory Examination) program, who must now be able to verbally account for work they submit. Preparation for these oral exams must happen without AI access, and students are required to disclose when AI was used on major assignments.

The oral-defense requirement is one of three initial steps. The ministry is also pushing schools to deploy screen-monitoring software during exams, install firewalls that restrict what students can reach during class and final assessments, and shift more assignments to supervised, on-campus conditions where oversight is stronger. Officials frame these as a starting point rather than a complete fix.

Groups representing school leaders, teachers, and students welcomed the intervention but warned that the pace of AI development demands more durable, long-term answers than monitoring and firewalls can provide. Education Minister Magnus Heunicke acknowledged the tools will keep advancing and pledged continued consultation with schools, teachers, and students. The underlying tension is one facing education systems everywhere: verifying that a credential reflects a student’s own skills and independent thinking, not an off-camera language model.
