DeepMind's Hassabis trades CEO title for chairman as Jeff Dean exits Google

Demis Hassabis is stepping back from running Google DeepMind day-to-day, becoming Chair of the unit and taking a new title as Chief Scientist of Alphabet. The move, announced August 5, 2026, lets him concentrate on long-horizon AGI strategy and the scientific applications of AI while continuing to lead drug-discovery spinout Isomorphic Labs. Rather than name a new CEO, Google elevated longtime CTO and Chief AI Architect Koray Kavukcuoglu to SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Sundar Pichai — consolidating operational control of the lab under Pichai’s office.

The reshuffle landed alongside a bigger loss: Jeff Dean, a 27-year veteran who co-designed much of Google’s core AI and systems infrastructure, is leaving with fellow Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to launch Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation aiming to automate machine learning and scientific research. Several outlets report additional senior researchers, including Gemini co-leads, are departing for the startup. Alphabet shares fell roughly 5% on the news.
