Debian has adopted a formal position that neither blesses nor bans generative AI in its development, packaging, and documentation work. The project frames the tools as a productivity aid — a way for volunteers to offload routine work and reserve their limited time for tasks that demand technical judgment, review, and collaboration. Notably, it stops short of endorsement, landing instead on a deliberately hands-off stance.

The core of the ruling is accountability rather than tooling. Any contribution must meet the same bar for quality, correctness, maintainability, and legal compliance regardless of how it was produced, and reaching for an AI assistant does not shift responsibility away from the person submitting the work. Contributors are expected to understand, review, test, and edit AI-generated output before it lands in Debian.
