Count Binface takes 27% in Clacton by-election, his best result yet

Novelty candidate Count Binface — the bin-headed alter ego of satirist Jon Harvey, a former writer for The Thick of It and Have I Got News For You — won 9,455 votes (26.9%) in the Clacton by-election, comfortably his strongest showing in a decade of joke candidacies. He finished second to Reform UK’s Nigel Farage, who reclaimed the seat with 22,239 votes (63.3%). The contest was triggered by Farage resigning only to stand again, a move the other major parties boycotted, leaving the field unusually open.

The result caps a career of high-profile losing runs. Harvey first stood in 2017 as Lord Buckethead against Theresa May (249 votes), rebranded as Count Binface to face Boris Johnson in 2019 (69 votes), took on Rishi Sunak in 2024 (308 votes), and challenged Andy Burnham earlier in 2026 (95 votes). At 26.9%, the Clacton tally is an order of magnitude beyond anything he had managed before and clears the 5% threshold needed to reclaim a candidate’s £500 deposit — a bar his previous outings never came close to.

Binface sits in a long British lineage of protest candidates, from Screaming Lord Sutch’s Monster Raving Loony Party to Al Murray’s Pub Landlord. The tradition survives because ballot access stays cheap: anyone over 18 with a £500 deposit and ten signatures can stand, and election rules force every candidate onto the same stage at the count. The joke has a serious edge — a sanctioned outlet for protest votes and a way to puncture the self-importance of political elites.
