Axler's 'Linear Algebra Done Right' 4th edition goes free and Open Access

Sheldon Axler has released the fourth edition of his best-selling textbook Linear Algebra Done Right under an Open Access, Creative Commons BY-NC license. Free electronic versions—PDF and Kindle—are now available in English, with translations already out in Chinese, Farsi, Greek, and Portuguese, and more languages promised. A hardcover print edition remains for sale through Amazon, but the core text no longer sits behind a paywall.

The book’s defining pedagogical choice is to sideline determinants, treating them as a late-chapter topic derived cleanly from alternating multilinear forms rather than as the foundation of the subject. Instead it builds understanding of linear operators on finite-dimensional vector spaces from the ground up: vector spaces, span and basis, linear maps, eigenvalues, inner product spaces, the finite-dimensional spectral theorem, and the singular value decomposition. The approach grew out of Axler’s award-winning expository paper ‘Down with Determinants!’

The fourth edition adds more than 250 new exercises and over 70 new examples alongside additional topics and revisions throughout. Aimed at a second course in linear algebra for undergraduate math majors and graduate students, the book has been adopted by more than 430 institutions. The move to a fully free, multilingual distribution model is notable less for the math than for what it signals about open-access publishing displacing traditional paid textbooks.
