Amazon Web Services has acknowledged that a portion of customer data cannot be recovered after physical attacks by Iran damaged facilities in the Middle East. The admission is unusual for a hyperscale cloud provider, whose durability guarantees are built around redundancy against hardware failure, power loss, and localized disasters — not sustained kinetic strikes on the physical sites themselves.

The incident underscores a risk that cloud customers rarely model: infrastructure sitting in or near active conflict zones. Standard multi-AZ replication protects against a single building failing, but coordinated physical destruction of facilities in a region can outrun those safeguards, especially where data was not mirrored to geographically distant regions. For organizations that treated ‘the cloud’ as inherently immune to physical loss, this is a pointed reminder that geography and geopolitics still matter.

The broader significance is about resilience planning and where sovereign or sensitive workloads are hosted.
