Asahi Linux Lands Official Support for Apple M3 Macs

The Asahi Linux project has merged M3-series support into its installer, bringing near-parity with what already worked on M1 and M2 hardware. On MacBooks and iMacs running M3, M3 Pro, or M3 Max chips, users get working webcams, internal microphones, USB at the hardware’s 10 Gb/s ceiling, WiFi, Bluetooth, and hardware-accelerated video decode including AV1. The Mac Studio’s M3 Ultra is not yet covered.

The two remaining gaps are the big ones: full DCP (display coprocessor) support and the GPU. Without DCP, sleep is broken and the HDMI port on equipped MacBooks stays dark, and 3D acceleration is neither performant nor power-efficient for now — the team says more GPU news is coming in the following months. Because the work is fresh, installation is gated behind the installer’s Expert mode (curl -L https://alx.sh/ | EXPERT=1 sh), followed by a dnf upgrade —refresh.

The project plans to lift the Expert-mode gate in time for the Fedora Linux 45 beta, expected in a couple of weeks, assuming no major regressions surface. The milestone is the payoff of years of work, much of it dependent on donated M3 hardware funded through the project’s OpenCollective and GitHub Sponsors backers.
