Apple's Hidden Assistive Access Turns a Spare iPhone Into a Free Kids' Dumb Phone

A parent hunting for a locked-down first phone for his son discovered that Apple’s standard Screen Time controls can’t fully block Safari — kids route around app restrictions by having friends text them links, which open despite the limits. Paid third-party ‘minimalist phone’ apps solve this but charge a fee to remove functionality, which he found absurd. The real answer was buried in iOS: Assistive Access, a mode introduced in iOS 17 for people with cognitive disabilities.

Assistive Access strips the interface down to large, friendly tiles and only shows apps the caregiver explicitly whitelists. Crucially, if you don’t add a browser, there’s no web access at all — and the mode treats any link in a message as plain text, closing the loophole that defeats Screen Time. Parents can scope Messages and Calls to favorites only, disable selfies, restrict Music to approved playlists, and lock the whole thing behind a four-digit passcode that only a triple-click of the side button can escape. The author repurposed a drawered iPhone 13 into a six-app device (Calls, Messages, Maps, Camera, Photos, Music) that still offers FaceTime, navigation, and Find My tracking at no monthly cost.

The catches are real but minor: the mode runs sluggishly, voicemail is disabled, you can’t power the phone off without exiting the mode, and the author reproduced a bug where searching emoji freezes Messages until an adult resets it. More telling is Apple’s silence — even store staff aren’t trained on the feature, the company declined to say why it doesn’t market Assistive Access for kids, and the iOS 27 Screen Time revamp arriving this September quietly borrows its best trick: the ability to remove Safari from a child’s profile for the first time.
