Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, bets on dual displays and on-device AI

Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, built around a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer screen that share an aspect ratio so content scales between the two without breaking continuity. Apple frames it as the thinnest iPhone when open and its most significant redesign since the original. Hardware highlights include a new A20 Pro chip with vapor-chamber cooling and dual batteries, a grade 5 titanium body with a 100-plus-component hinge, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, and an IP68 rating. The foldable form factor is the pitch for both the camera and the software. A 48MP main sensor pairs with features that only work because the phone folds: Smart Take uses on-device AI on the A20 Pro to auto-capture when subjects pose, while Duo Preview and Duo FaceTime turn the outer screen into a viewfinder or second call display. Apple Intelligence and a revamped Siri — including a Siri Camera mode that can act on what the camera sees — position the device as a showcase for Apple’s AI ambitions, running inference locally rather than in the cloud.

For a technical audience, the notable threads are the durability engineering behind folding glass (custom adhesives, a titanium support plate, a stiffer nano-textured polymer cover) and the continued push of AI workloads onto the device silicon. Security-wise, authentication stays conventional: Touch ID moves into the side button so it works open or closed, with Apple Watch unlock as a fallback. This is a consumer product launch rather than a security story, but it signals where Apple is steering its hardware-plus-AI strategy.
