Apple's $129 AirPods 5 push ANC and on-device AI into its cheapest earbuds

Apple has unveiled AirPods 5, moving active noise cancellation into its lowest-priced open-ear model at $129, with a $149 variant adding a wireless charging case, on-stem volume control, and longer battery life (up to five hours with ANC, 22 with the case). A redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and updated Adaptive EQ are claimed to cut external noise by up to 50 percent over the previous generation while improving sound and Transparency mode. The more consequential story is software. AirPods 5 lean heavily on Apple Intelligence and the rebuilt “Siri AI,” which Apple is shipping as a beta in iOS 27 on September 14. The assistant is pitched as drawing on personal context across a user’s messages, emails, and photos to answer queries and trigger app actions hands-free—raising the usual questions about how much personal data an always-listening earbud funnels into an on-device or cloud model. Head-gesture responses and Live Translation, now available across the entire AirPods line, round out the intelligent features.

For a technical audience, the launch is less about audio specs than about Apple normalizing ambient, context-aware AI through commodity hardware. Bundling deep personal-context inference into $129 earbuds broadens the attack and privacy surface considerably, and the staggered, English-first rollout of Siri AI signals the feature set is still maturing. Apple also reiterated supply-chain and sustainability claims, including 40 percent recycled materials and 35 percent renewable energy across manufacturing.
