Apple unveils iPhone Duo, its first foldable, leaning hard on on-device AI

Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, positioned as the thinnest iPhone with the largest display the company has shipped — a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR panel roughly 50 percent bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, paired with an outer screen that matches the aspect ratio for a seamless handoff between the two. The design leans on Grade 5 titanium, a Ceramic Shield front and back, an under-display FaceTime camera, and IP68 water and dust resistance, with iOS 27 reworked around new ‘posable’ orientations that let the device fold into landscape, portrait, standing, and seated modes for multitasking and hands-free use.

The pitch is heavily weighted toward AI and silicon. The A20 Pro chip carries a dual 16-core Neural Engine that Apple frames as purpose-built for intensive on-device AI, cooled by a vapor-chamber thermal system, while a new C2 modem and an iPhone-first dual-battery layout (enabled by dropping the physical SIM for an eSIM-only design) are meant to offset the power cost of the larger displays. Software features include a more capable Siri AI assistant, Apple Intelligence writing and photo tools, and foldable-specific camera tricks like Duo FaceTime, Smart Take, and Kid Cue.

For a technical audience, the notable signals are less about the marketing poses and more about the platform bets: an eSIM-only, foldable form factor, dedicated AI silicon with aggressive thermal engineering, and satellite-based Messages as a baseline connectivity feature. Apple is also using the launch to court Android switchers, emphasizing trade-in credit and resale value — a reminder that the foldable category, long dominated by Samsung and others, now has Apple’s full weight behind it.
