Apple to skip high-end M6 chips, leap to AI-focused M7 Pro/Max/Ultra

Apple is reworking its Mac silicon roadmap in a way it hasn’t before: rather than building out a full M6 lineup, it plans to ship only a base M6 in entry-level Macs—possibly later this year—and skip the higher-end variants of that generation entirely. The premium tier will instead jump straight to a new M7 family explicitly oriented around AI workloads, expected to span Pro, Max, and Ultra configurations.

The move signals that Apple sees on-device AI as the defining axis for its top-end machines and is willing to compress its usual generation-by-generation cadence to get there.
