Ancient Library puts 1,060 classical texts online with click-to-parse for every word

Ancient Library is a web-based reader for the classical canon that turns close reading of Greek and Latin into a point-and-click exercise. Clicking any word in any text surfaces its lemma, full morphological analysis, and the complete dictionary entry — Lewis & Short for Latin, Liddell-Scott-Jones for Greek — removing the constant flipping between text and lexicon that has always slowed students and scholars.

The collection is substantial: 1,060 works from 140 authors, split into 293 Latin and 767 Greek texts, organized by genre from epic, tragedy, and oratory to science, medicine, and early Christian writings. The Greek side leans heavily on prose, with hundreds of works of oratory and biography (Plutarch alone accounts for 146), while the Latin side spans Caesar and Cicero through Ovid and Pliny.

The significance is less about novel technology than about consolidation and access. By pairing public-domain texts with the standard reference lexica in an integrated, browsable interface, the site lowers the barrier to reading primary sources in the original languages — a practical digital-humanities resource rather than a research breakthrough.
