Amazon's AI Push Funds a Texas Gas Plant Poised to Be a Top US Polluter

Amazon is bankrolling a natural gas plant in Texas to power its AI data centers, a facility the New York Times reports could become the single largest source of climate pollution in the country. It marks Amazon’s first major bet on an off-the-grid data center — one that generates its own electricity rather than drawing from the public grid — and it lands squarely inside a growing pattern: as AI compute demand surges, hyperscalers are pairing data centers with dedicated gas generation that produces pollutants linked to asthma, heart disease, and cancer.

The move sidesteps a mounting political fight. After xAI’s Colossus site began running gas turbines last spring, the NAACP’s Mississippi chapter sued to shut them down, and the Trump administration intervened on xAI’s side, arguing private citizens can’t enforce the Clean Air Act. Rather than wait out that battle, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and Amazon have leaned into self-supplied power projects that avoid drawn-out permitting — and the Trump administration favors fast-tracking that can skip environmental review entirely.

The significance is in the momentum. Community opposition has blocked roughly $130 billion in data center projects this year, but gas plants tied to AI buildouts are clearing approvals with little friction. A loss in the xAI case would further weaken residents’ leverage, suggesting that for the specific category of behind-the-meter gas generation, local resistance may have little effect on where the AI industry chooses to burn fuel.
